In Ecuador, Vida Plena is revolutionizing mental health care across Latin America. This inspiring NGO is driving significant change in areas where emotional well-being often goes unnoticed, thanks to their pro-bono partnership with Digital Mountaineers from the Tech To The Rescue community. Their collaboration showcases how pro-bono partnerships can amplify the impact of changemakers like Vida Plena, allowing them to concentrate their fundraising efforts on their core mission.
A Vision Fueled by Necessity and Passion
Founded by Joy Bittner, a dedicated social impact leader, Vida Plena was born out of a profound need to address the mental health crisis in Latin America. Joy’s journey began a decade ago when she moved to Ecuador to lead a fair-trade jewelry company. Witnessing the intertwined struggles of poverty and mental health, she realized that economic support alone was insufficient, and this realization led her to establish Vida Plena, aiming to provide high-quality, evidence-based mental health care to those who need it most.
“Earlier in my life, I never imagined that I would seek to launch a new organization. I didn’t think of myself as the entrepreneurial type. But [I knew that] it’s unjust that, despite the availability of proven, evidence-based models for improving mental health, these resources remain inaccessible to many,” Bittner explains.
In Ecuador, mental health receives less than 0.4% of the national healthcare budget—a stark contrast to other Latin American countries. With high unemployment rates and the prohibitive costs of private care, affordable mental health services are desperately needed.
“Vida Plena, which means <<a flourishing life>> in Spanish, was born out of a well-worn desire to help people who are living with the challenges that come from poverty.”
Today, Vida Plena’s mission is clear: to ensure that everyone, regardless of economic or geographic circumstances, has access to high-quality, evidence-based mental health care. One of the models used is Group Interpersonal Therapy (g-IPT), which ensures that the interventions are not only theoretically sound but also practically practical, an approach that increases the likelihood of positive outcomes for participants.

One of the most compelling stories of Vida Plena’s impact is that of Paola, a young woman whose life was transformed through Vida Plena’s group therapy sessions. Facing family strain, financial burdens, and verbal abuse, Paola found solace and strength in the supportive environment Vida Plena provided. Through role-playing and boundary-setting exercises, Paola learned to navigate her challenges and even inspired her to embrace the path of entrepreneurship and create a line of sugar-free cookies for people with diabetes. Her story is a testament to the effects of effective mental health support.
Breaking Down Cultural and Financial Barriers with Technology
As the story of Paola shows, mental health issues in Ecuador are more than just statistics—they are real, daily struggles that affect every aspect of life. From strained relationships and deteriorating physical health to a significantly increased risk of suicide, the impacts are profound. Globally, mental illness costs approximately $2.5 trillion annually due to lost productivity and treatment expenses, with an estimated 12 billion productive days lost each year to depression alone.
Despite these alarming figures, mental health remains heavily stigmatized in Ecuador, creating significant barriers for those seeking help.
“Mental health is still heavily stigmatized in Ecuador, and these deeply rooted beliefs prevent people from seeking the help they need.” says Bittner.
This is where technology becomes a game-changer, from raising awareness to offering comprehensive and safe resources and connecting professionals with patients. It becomes clear that nonprofits like Vida Plena, cannot fully amplify their impact without technology, and securing such technology is often a daunting challenge due to limited funds.

Tech To The Rescue: Building an Impact-driven Movement
At Tech To The Rescue, we aim to ensure that every ambitious nonprofit with proven impact has access to technology. We work towards this mission by forging strategic pro-bono tech partnerships that drive meaningful impact. Through our matching platform and global community, we connected Vida Plena with Digital Mountaineers, a standout member of our community that has offered pro-bono support to multiple nonprofits over the past two years.
A Partnership That Transforms Lives
For Vida Plena, the collaboration with Digital Mountaineers began with a crucial need: a professional and accessible online presence. Previously, Vida Plena’s website was a homemade effort by one of their psychologists—functional but lacking in professionalism and user-friendliness.
“I used to feel embarrassed to share the old website with partners or refer people to it because it didn’t project the right image,” shares Bittner.
Digital Mountaineers embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, leveraging their expertise to revamp Vida Plena’s website. Using WordPress with Elementor, they crafted a user-friendly, visually appealing site that accurately represents Vida Plena’s commitment to high-quality mental health care. Innovative features like a WhatsApp chat button were integrated to facilitate easier access to services, ensuring that those in need could reach out effortlessly.
Amplifying Impact Through Technology
The effect of the project gave the Vida Plena team an immediate boost in their communication, reach, and brand perception.
“The new website truly reflects the level of professionalism that we have as a team. We are deeply committed to providing high-quality mental health care, and this new website now visually communicates that,” Joy explains.
The enhanced online presence not only boosted Vida Plena’s credibility but also made it easier to attract partners, donors, and participants.

Turning a Local Initiative into Regional Advocacy for Mental Health
As Vida Plena continues to grow, their partnership with Digital Mountaineers serves as an inspiring example of how technology can drive social impact. With plans to expand their services to indigenous Kichwa communities in rural northern Ecuador, Vida Plena is poised to address mental health needs in culturally sensitive and impactful ways.
“Now, I feel proud to direct people to our site, knowing it accurately represents who we are,” Joy reflects, highlighting the personal and organizational pride that comes with a professional digital presence.
This expansion includes training local community leaders as group facilitators, providing mental health support in native languages, and respecting traditional practices. These efforts ensure that mental health care is not only accessible but also culturally relevant, bridging gaps that have long hindered effective support.
