At AI for Changemakers, we highlight the impactful work of nonprofits, but the tech partners who support them are equally crucial. Cristian Beres, CEO of Synergo Group, offers a hands-on, risk-sharing approach that goes beyond mere execution. In this interview, Beres reveals how this dedicated support is helping nonprofits achieve groundbreaking AI innovations, ensuring they never walk alone in their mission to create social change.

Jean Ekwa: Cristi, it’s a pleasure to speak with you today. To start, could you share what sets Synergo Group apart from other tech companies, and what ignites your passion for social impact?

Cristi Beres: Thank you, Jean. What sets Synergo Group apart is our commitment to going beyond mere execution. In a highly competitive environment with numerous providers, we strive to differentiate ourselves by deeply understanding the specific challenges our clients and social impact and nonprofit organizations face. Rather than just implementing solutions, we engage with these organizations to actively contribute to their mission-driven success. This approach involves sharing the risk with our clients both commercial and nonprofit by providing what we call a “white glove” service that builds trust and loyalty. This deep engagement helps us establish long-term relationships, even if an engagement ends due to changes like business direction shifts or funding issues. Often, clients and partners return or refer us because they value our approach and the ongoing support we provide, because we aim to contribute, not just execute.

Jean Ekwa: That’s a thoughtful approach. How does this philosophy extend to working with the nonprofit sector?

Cristi Beres: Our philosophy translates well to the nonprofit sector. Many nonprofits are underserved, often due to limited financial resources which hinder their access to advanced technology. We see this as an opportunity to give back and support those who are making a significant impact but might be struggling with technological constraints. By applying our expertise, we aim to bridge these gaps and help nonprofits leverage technology to further their missions and reach their goals more effectively.

Jean Ekwa: You recently joined the AI for Changemakers initiative. What motivated you to get involved, and what are your goals for this project?

Cristi Beres: Our involvement in AI for Changemakers is driven by a desire to set a powerful example and drive significant social change. We’ve had experience working with nonprofits in the past, and we even developed a product called Impact Map to support them. This initiative aligns perfectly with our mission to contribute to meaningful change and enhance our visibility. It’s also an opportunity for us to upskill our team while addressing real challenges faced by nonprofits. We see this as a way to apply our skills in a context that not only benefits the organizations we work with but also contributes to our growth and learning.

Jean Ekwa: Interesting. Have you worked with AI in the nonprofit sector before, or is this a new venture for you?

Cristi Beres: Our experience with AI has primarily been in the financial services technology and medical sectors, so this is a new venture for us in the nonprofit space. While we have utilized AI in various applications, this is our first opportunity to apply it specifically within the nonprofit sector. We’re excited to explore how our AI capabilities can be adapted to address the unique challenges that NGOs face. This new area presents an opportunity for us to innovate and find ways to make a tangible impact.

Jean Ekwa: Given your experience, do you see any potential uses of AI that could revolutionize the nonprofit sector?

Cristi Beres: AI has tremendous potential to transform the nonprofit sector. Although we don’t have a specific solution in mind yet, we believe that AI can address various challenges if applied thoughtfully. We approach this by first understanding the problems that NGOs face and then adapting our technological solutions to meet those needs. For instance, our previous project, Impact Map, aimed to enhance communication and collaboration among NGOs. This tool helped NGOs better tell their stories and manage resources, which is critical in sectors like disaster management and resource optimization. We’re eager to find similar ways to apply AI to make a meaningful difference.

Jean Ekwa: That’s insightful. Do you have any advice for nonprofits starting to collaborate with tech companies, especially in the realm of AI? And what would you recommend to tech companies new to working with nonprofits?

Cristi Beres: For nonprofits, understanding AI’s capabilities and limitations is crucial. They should educate themselves through courses, seminars, and partnerships with tech companies. Engaging with experts can help them identify practical applications of AI and how it can benefit their work. For tech companies, I recommend considering how their resources can contribute to social good. Even if you have underutilized assets or skills, applying them to impactful projects can provide personal and professional growth. This approach not only benefits the community but also enhances the company’s reputation and skills.

Jean Ekwa: Lastly, what does being involved in a social impact project mean to you personally?

Cristi Beres: Personally, being involved in a social impact project means addressing the challenges faced by NGOs that rely heavily on external funding and have limited resources. I’ve seen a lot of waste in various industries and am motivated by the desire to reduce that waste and make a positive difference. Even a small effort can have a significant impact, especially when it comes to balancing resource availability and improving conditions for those in need. It’s about using our skills and resources to contribute to a better world.
